Klaviyo vs Brevo for ecommerce: choose around the work you need done

Choose the platform that can run your store’s required work, then price the actual account and sending pattern.

The short answer

Choose around required workflows and verified integration data. Test both platforms with the same purchase, abandonment, refund and consent scenarios; obtain current quotes for the same account size and send volume; include setup and operating effort. Neither platform is universally the better or cheaper choice.

Begin with the work the platform must do

List the customer journeys you need to operate over the next six months. A store sending a weekly newsletter and basic order-related messages has different requirements from a store branching lifecycle messages by variant, refund status, replenishment interval and customer history. Write the actual trigger, data, decision, message and exit condition for each journey. Avoid turning a list of interesting features into requirements that nobody plans to use.

Choose three essential workflows and one difficult edge case for evaluation. For example: welcome after confirmed signup, checkout recovery that stops after purchase, product-specific care after delivery, and a partial refund that must suppress an unsuitable promotion. Identify who will maintain these workflows. A platform that can theoretically support them may still be a poor fit if every adjustment requires external development the store cannot fund. The buying decision should connect capability to real operating capacity, not just the sophistication of a demonstration account.

Compare integration evidence rather than category labels

Both services offer automation capabilities, but the important question is which events and properties arrive from your actual store and installed integration. Confirm purchase identifiers, ordered items, variants, quantities, value, currency, refunds and marketing permission. Inspect timestamps and a sample profile timeline. A product logo on an integrations page does not prove every field needed for a workflow is available.

Klaviyo documents metric, list, segment and date-based flow concepts in its trigger and filter guide. Brevo documents its cart workflow prerequisites in its abandoned-cart setup guide. Use these references to plan tests, then inspect the data in the account. Do not assume that a workflow built for one event model can be copied unchanged into another. Event naming, identity, exit behavior and data freshness determine whether the same business intent is implemented correctly.

Use a requirement matrix with hard failures

On a small screen, swipe the table to see every column.

RequirementTest evidenceDecision rule
Checkout recoveryIdentified checkout followed by purchaseNo recovery message after confirmed purchase
Product-specific follow-upExact ordered variant and usable item fieldsCorrect content without manual exports
Consent handlingSignup, unsubscribe and resubscription casesSuppression persists and is honored
ReportingOrders traced to defined attribution logicDefinitions are inspectable and exportable
OperationsNamed owner edits and diagnoses a flowMaintenance fits available time and skills

Separate essential requirements from preferences. A missing consent safeguard should not be averaged away by an attractive template library. Mark each requirement verified, failed or unresolved. Keep unresolved items visible until tested or explicitly accepted. Score preferences only after both platforms clear the essential conditions. This prevents an impressive overall feature score from hiding a small but consequential gap in the store's daily work.

Price the same workload in both systems

Klaviyo's billing documentation describes active-profile and email-send considerations and plan adjustment behavior. Brevo's plan documentation describes email-volume tiers, contact storage and plan-specific automation limits. Do not rely on the old shorthand that one vendor bills for contacts and the other ignores contact counts. Current entitlements and limits need checking for the actual plan.

Build a dated quote scenario: reachable profiles, stored contacts, campaign sends, automated sends, users, additional channels, required reporting and expected seasonal peaks. Include transactional sending requirements and any paid add-ons. Ask what happens when each relevant limit is exceeded and whether a downgrade requires action. Keep currency, taxes, monthly versus annual commitment and discounts visible. A promotional starting price is not a reliable estimate of the store's steady-state cost, especially when the required workflow depends on a higher plan or separate product.

Include labor and migration in total cost

Estimate implementation, data cleanup, template rebuilding, authentication, integration review, quality assurance and staff training. Add ongoing work such as monitoring errors, maintaining segments, updating product blocks and handling consent exceptions. An apparently cheaper subscription can require more manual work; a more expensive plan can still be unnecessary if its additional capabilities are not used. Evaluate both possibilities with the same assumptions.

For an illustrative comparison, suppose one option costs $120 monthly and requires six monthly hours of routine work, while another costs $200 and requires three hours. At an illustrative internal labor value of $40 per hour, operating costs are $360 and $320 respectively before migration costs. These are invented planning inputs, not vendor prices or typical labor requirements. Change them to your own estimates and test sensitivity. The example shows why subscription alone is an incomplete decision measure, not why either named vendor must be cheaper.

Test a realistic checkout recovery journey

Use approved test profiles and test orders. Trigger an identified checkout, allow the configured delay to begin, and then complete a purchase before the message is due. Verify whether the purchase reaches the platform, whether filters are evaluated again and whether the message is skipped. Repeat with delayed events, a second checkout and an unsubscribe. Test the recovery link on a phone and confirm the selected items are correct.

Klaviyo's cart-flow documentation explains the role of a purchase-exclusion profile filter. Brevo's documented cart workflow uses its own tracking and purchase-event model. The goal is equivalent customer behavior, not identical configuration labels. Save screenshots or exported logic and event timelines from both tests. If a platform fails, distinguish a missing integration field from a configuration mistake before judging the product. A successful demonstration should include the uncomfortable edge cases as well as the expected send.

Evaluate reporting definitions and exports

Ask each platform to explain its attributed revenue logic, attribution windows and treatment of opens, clicks, refunds and overlapping channels. Platform-attributed revenue is not a causal estimate of sales that would disappear without email. Two vendors can assign different amounts to the same store because their rules differ. Compare performance only after documenting those differences.

Check whether you can inspect recipient activity, event history, suppression state, message status and order identifiers. Test the exports needed by finance and marketing. A founder should be able to distinguish eligible profiles, queued messages, skipped messages, delivered messages and resulting orders. Do not choose based on whichever dashboard reports the larger email revenue number in a short trial. Judge whether the data helps the team diagnose failures and make decisions using consistent definitions. Independent commerce totals and contribution margin should remain part of the commercial assessment.

Protect consent and suppression during migration

A migration is a data project as well as a template project. Export permission provenance, channel consent, unsubscribes, hard bounces and other suppressions in a form the receiving platform can honor. Do not convert every historical buyer into a marketing subscriber. Map identifiers carefully so duplicate profiles do not receive overlapping messages. Check regional requirements with the appropriate owner rather than treating a platform setting as legal advice.

Plan event cutover and flow overlap. If both platforms run cart recovery at the same time, a shopper can receive duplicate reminders even though each individual flow works. If both are paused for too long, necessary communications may be delayed. Separate essential transactional messages from optional marketing flows and maintain a clear ownership register. Pilot a limited audience, verify the data and review actual outcomes before scaling. Retain access to necessary historical records according to the business's retention requirements and vendor terms.

Make a conditional recommendation

Klaviyo is worth serious evaluation when the store needs detailed event-driven commerce journeys and has someone who can maintain them. Brevo is worth serious evaluation when its supported integrations, broader communication workflows and current plan limits meet the required work at an acceptable total cost. These are evaluation starting points, not universal verdicts about capability or price.

Keep the recommendation tied to evidence. A store might choose Klaviyo after verifying complex item-level branches and finding that the operating team can manage them efficiently. Another might choose Brevo after proving that a simpler set of workflows works reliably and the quoted total cost fits. A third should postpone migration because neither trial resolves missing purchase or consent data from the source. Software selection cannot repair an undefined process or unreliable integration by itself. The decision record should explain which requirements were demonstrated and which tradeoffs were accepted.

Stress-test the account with three workload scenarios

Price a normal month, a seasonal peak and a quieter month using the same requirements. In the normal scenario, include all campaigns and expected automated sends, not only newsletter volume. In the peak scenario, account for more subscribers, additional flows, higher transaction activity and any temporary users or channels. In the quiet scenario, check whether the account can reduce cost and what manual steps, timing or commitments govern that change. Use current account quotes rather than extrapolating from a promotional starting tier.

Add a requirements-to-plan table in the trial record. For every essential capability, identify the plan, add-on or integration that supplies it, the relevant limit and the evidence from the test. This prevents a low quoted base price from being compared with another vendor's complete operating setup. Include support availability and recovery needs if the store depends on timely assistance. Avoid assigning a cash value to vague assurances such as “easier to use” until the actual operator has performed a representative task and recorded the effort.

Evaluate migration payback separately from steady-state cost. Suppose an illustrative move requires 24 internal hours at a $40 planning value, plus $240 in other setup cost. The modeled one-time cost is $1,200. At an estimated $100 monthly net saving, simple payback is twelve months before considering uncertainty or disruption. If the monthly saving falls to $50, payback becomes twenty-four months. These figures are hypothetical and do not represent either vendor's prices. The exercise helps the founder see whether a small subscription difference justifies a migration, or whether improving the current system is the more practical next step while essential requirements remain satisfied.

Review the first month as an operating trial

Set acceptance criteria before signing a long commitment. Check that event coverage, unsubscribe behavior, purchase exclusions, sender authentication and message rendering remain correct after live traffic begins. Review workload with the person doing the work. A workflow that passed once may fail when an unusual order status or another app changes the event payload.

Your next action is a side-by-side trial brief containing three required workflows, a hard-failure matrix, matched quote inputs and a migration checklist. Ask the actual operator to build or edit one flow in each environment. Save the evidence and choose only when essential requirements pass. Revisit the choice when catalog complexity, audience size, required channels or operating capacity changes. A documented conditional decision is more durable than a generic winner label because it explains what would have to change for the other platform to become the better fit.

Common questions

Is Brevo always cheaper than Klaviyo?

No. Compare current quotes for the same stored contacts, reachable audience, sends, users and required capabilities, then include labor and migration. Plan limits and add-ons can change the result.

Should I migrate because another platform reports more email revenue?

No. Attribution logic can differ. Compare definitions and validated store outcomes before interpreting attributed revenue as superior performance.

What is the most important trial test?

Choose the workflow whose failure would harm customers most. For many stores, checkout recovery must stop after purchase and every marketing workflow must honor suppression.
