Before changing the store, write the question you need the numbers to answer. For example: “Are fewer mobile visitors completing a purchase, or are we attracting a different mix of visitors?”

Those explanations need different checks.
Check what each report counts
Write down the date range, time zone, sales channel and definition of each metric. Confirm whether “visits” means sessions or users, and whether “orders” includes the same sales channels you are measuring.
Check for changes to tags, consent settings or the platform’s measurement definitions during the period. If Google tags load only after analytics consent, activity from people who do not consent is outside that measurement. Google’s basic consent-mode documentation explains that behavior.
A reporting change is a reason to investigate, not proof that shoppers have lost interest.
Find the stage worth investigating
Use the available funnel data to choose a starting point:
- Visits without cart additions: check whether the landing page matches what brought the visitor there, and whether product information, options and price are clear.
- Cart additions without checkout: examine delivery costs, stock availability and the next step from the cart.
- Checkout without a completed order: check validation errors, payment options and whether the task can be completed on mobile.
These are possible explanations, not findings about your store.
For Shopify, check whether the funnel is open or closed. An open funnel can include someone entering at checkout; a closed funnel requires the earlier steps in sequence. Express purchase paths can skip steps. Shopify’s behavior-report guidance explains how to interpret the funnel.
Compare a specific journey
Compare mobile with mobile, and inspect traffic source and landing page alongside the totals. A campaign bringing different visitors can change the overall conversion rate without showing that an existing journey became harder to use.
Record changes to pricing, promotions and stock during the same period.
Choose one checkable next step
Reproduce the suspected problem in a safe test environment. Describe what happened, where it happened and the proposed fix. Agree who will check it and what evidence would support or challenge your explanation.
After a change, review the same measures and note other changes that could affect them. A short before-and-after comparison alone does not establish what caused the result.
